Blue Sky Beads – Akeley Minnesota

June 6, 2013

Have you heard of this cute jewelry studio located just south of Akeley?   If you haven’t, you MUST check it out.  It is one of my most favorite places to buy jewelry, and what’s even better is that it’s located up here in our Northern MN neck of the woods.     Whether you live here or are just visiting the Northern Minnesota region and looking for some “girly” things to do.. consider stopping by Blue Sky Beads.   And ok, if your husband or boyfriend insists, he is more than welcome to drop by too.  I’m sure they would be happy to let him pay for your “pretty jewelry purchases”.  🙂

Let me first introduce you to the owner Sandy,  and a little bit of her background.

Owner, Blue Sky Beads

Sandy Fynboh Andress, owner and artist of Blue Sky Beads, has been creating original blown glass and lampwork beads since 1999.    She creates these works of art free hand in a torch, anneals them in a kiln over a 16 hour period and then cleans and incorporates them into original pieces of jewelry.

Sandy began working with glass in a very experimental way.  After developing a style that she felt was her own, she studied under scientific glass blower, Donni Hatz and glass artist, Larry Scott.  She then took the techniques they taught  her, blended with her own trial and error processes to create beads and jewelry that are unique and interesting wearable art guaranteed to be a conversation piece.

Sandy is inspired by the beauty and diversity of the plant life native to Northern Minnesota and loves finding ways to incorporate images of the native plant life and representations of water life into her beads.  She enjoys taking ancient techniques, blending them with modern tools and supplies to create interesting contemporary looks.

Her studio is open to the Public Tuesday-Saturday from 10am-5pm seasonally.  You will find her handmade beads and  jewelry as well as manufactured glass and stones and beading supplies.   At Blue Sky Beads, you may purchase a piece of original work, design your own to be finished there or purchase beads and beading supplies.

Check out some of the beautiful work you will find at Blue Sky Beads.
