This wonderful family came together late this summer at their beautiful lake home on Leech Lake in Walker, Minnesota. It was quite the busy year for them as they welcomed two beautiful baby girls into their family, which made updating their family portraits even more special.
Like all of my outdoor sessions, making sure we have the ideal conditions is paramount. For this family, I knew right away that we were going to have some challenges based on the way their property faced the lake. After some research and a visit to their property a few days prior to their session, we made a time change and wound up with the best ideal conditions that we could get for their property. I love working with clients whom trust me and are flexible!
What are the best ideal conditions?
Over the past 13 years as a professional photographer, I’ve found that my clients idea versus mine is completely opposite. I’m betting that if your location has a lake/water view, you’ll want that in your images correct? We tend to have a lot of that up here in Northern Minnesota. 🙂 The most common misconception is that my clients think the sun should be shining on their faces. Unfortunately, this couldn’t be any more problematic. Why? When you stare into the sun, or your face is towards the sun, what do your eyes do? That’s right! You will be squinting. Unless of course, you are all wearing sunglasses. 🙂
The best lighting scenario is having the sun at your back, and your photographer is staring into the sun. Don’t worry, we know what we are doing. Trust me. It’s funny how many people I’ve met over the years that simply don’t believe me, yet when they see their images, they totally get it!
Next time you are wanting to schedule a photo session with a professional photographer, or myself 🙂 take a moment to evaluate your space. Even if you don’t know which way the sun will be shining at your location, just make sure you hire someone who is asking these questions. I know it’s importance and I only want my clients to have beautiful images.
